Inferring Fitness in Finite Populations with Moran-like dynamics

چکیده

Biological fitness is not an observable quantity and must be inferred from population dynamics. Bayesian inference applied to the Moran process and variants yields a robust inference method that can infer fitness in populations evolving via a Moran dynamic and generalizations. Information about fitness is derived solely from birth-events in birthdeath and death-birth processes in which selection acts proportionally to fitness, which allows the method to be applied to populations on a network where the network itself may be changing in time. Populations may also be allowed to change size while still allowing estimates for fitness to be inferred.

Non-Gaussian fluctuations arising from finite populations: Exact results for the evolutionary Moran process.

The appropriate description of fluctuations within the framework of evolutionary game theory is a fundamental unsolved problem in the case of finite populations. The Moran process recently introduced into this context in Nowak, [Nature (London) 428, 646 (2004)] defines a promising standard model of evolutionary game theory in finite populations for which analytical results are accessible. In th...

Drift reversal in asymmetric coevolutionary conflicts: Influence of microscopic processes and population size

The coevolutionary dynamics in finite populations currently is investigated in a wide range of disciplines, as chemical catalysis, biological evolution, social and economic systems. The dynamics of those systems can be formulated within the unifying framework of evolutionary game theory. However it is not a priori clear which mathematical description is appropriate when populations are not infi...

The continuous limit of the Moran process and the diffusion of mutant genes in infinite populations

We consider the so called Moran process with frequency dependent fitness given by a certain pay-off matrix. For finite populations, we show that the final state must be homogeneous, and show how to compute the fixation probabilities. Next, we consider the infinite population limit, and discuss the appropriate scalings for the drift-diffusion limit. In this case, a degenerated parabolic PDE is f...

Evolutionary processes in finite populations.

We consider the evolution of large but finite populations on arbitrary fitness landscapes. We describe the evolutionary process by a Markov-Moran process. We show that to O(1/N), the time-averaged fitness is lower for the finite population than it is for the infinite population. We also show that fluctuations in the number of individuals for a given genotype can be proportional to a power of th...

Evolutionary game dynamics in finite populations with strong selection and weak mutation.

We study stochastic game dynamics in finite populations. To this end we extend the classical Moran process to incorporate frequency-dependent selection and mutation. For 2 x 2 games, we give a complete analysis of the long-run behavior when mutation rates are small. For 3 x 3 coordination games, we provide a simple rule to determine which strategy will be selected in large populations. The expe...
